In about a week, one of my dreams is coming true. I started this blog back in 2010 as an extension of a Bible study that I had written and led at our church. The idea was that we need to teach our kids about God with whatever time we have, in everyday situations. The blog has grown and changed a bit, but that’s still the basic premise.
Along with the blog, I dreamed of a mom’s group where women were able to connect with each other while learning about what God has planned for them. At the same time, I wanted those moms to gain some practical ideas for teaching their kids about God at home.
For nearly three years, I’ve harbored this dream. I would float the idea, only to not get the response that I needed. It seemed God was saying wait. About six months ago, I felt a persistent tug on my heart to float the idea again, and this time, God said yes. The leaders at my church got behind it, and the ladies that I needed to help stepped up and took over the pieces they are uniquely gifted to deal with.
The result is that on Tuesday, Sept. 4, Mom Matters launches. If you live in the Kansas City area and you are looking to join a mom’s group, I encourage you to come. We don’t care how old your kids are or if you’ve ever been in a mom’s group before. If you’re hungry for companionship and a chance to dive into God’s word, come join us. We’re all about creating a group where the members encourage each other. Our theme verse is 1 Thessalonians 5:11, “Therefore encourage one another and build each other up, just as in fact you are doing.” We meet from 9:15 to 11:15 at Westside Family Church in Lenexa, Kansas. You can sign up and get more details here.
This year, we’re studying the fruits of the spirit. Each month, we’ll look at a different fruit of the spirit. We’re starting with love. We meet weekly and each week has a different focus. The first week will be a speaker and a potluck breakfast. The second through fourth weeks of the month will be discussion-oriented with most of our discussion taking place in smaller table groups. Week 2 will focus on how that fruit of the spirit is manifested in God’s character. Week 3 will look at how that fruit can manifest itself in our lives and our relationships. And week 4 puts the emphasis on how you can nurture that fruit of the spirit in your kids.
As I was praying for Mom Matters this week, I was struck by God’s awesome timing. While I’ve wanted to do this group for years, I wasn’t ready. I wasn’t ready to lead. I wasn’t ready to write the curriculum. And I wasn’t ready to put it all in God’s hands and watch Him work. In the past three years since God gave me this dream, it’s evolved into what it is today, and I’m much better equipped to lead it than I ever would have been three years ago. I’m older, my kids are older, I hope I’m wiser, and I’m much more able to follow God’s direction.
So, if you have a dream that God has placed on your heart, it’s OK to wait for God’s timing. When we plunge ahead without Him, things are never going to work out well. If your kids have a dream that requires them to wait, encourage them to learn all they can in the waiting. Because God makes all things beautiful in His time.
I can’t wait to see the beauty He’s created on Tuesday morning. I’d love it if you’d come join us.
